JBE Transitions to Standards-Based Report Cards for Grades K–2

Starting this school year, Jimmy Brown Elementary is implementing standards-based report cards for kindergarten through 2nd grade. This new format provides a clearer, more detailed picture of your child’s academic progress. Over the next few newsletters, we’ll walk you through what’s changing, why, and how to interpret the new system.

See you soon,

Mrs. Kari & Mrs. Laura Brooke

What is a Standards-Based Report Card?

  • Focuses on specific learning goals or standards.

  • Shows exactly what your child knows and can do—no more mystery behind the grade.

  • Uses a 1–3 scale to indicate progress toward mastery (not A–F).

  • Prioritizes growth, clarity, and skill development.

  • Helps you and your child understand strengths and areas for improvement.

Why Is JBE Moving to SBRCs in K–2?

We believe this approach better supports learning. Standards-based report cards:

  • Offer clear communication about what’s expected in each subject.

  • Allow for more personalized instruction and support.

  • Show progress over time instead of averaging grades.

  • Reflect our commitment to ensuring every student is learning at their level.

What Will Stay the Same at JBE?

You’ll still get regular communication about your child’s learning. Teachers will continue to provide quality instruction, enrichment, and support. SBRCs simply offer a clearer tool to help us work together to help your child grow.

FAQs

  • Will my child still get honor roll? Recognition will reflect mastery and effort, not just averages.

  • What about behavior? Behavior is reported separately and will continue to be communicated clearly.

  • Can I talk to the teacher about the report card? Absolutely! Conferences and communication are encouraged.
